Deacons

Jonny Fillis

Jonny has been our minister since September 2020. He married the wonderful Bex in 2010 and they have since had two young, energetic, and lovely boys: Josh and Toby. Jonny enjoys most sports, a variety of music, reading, a good box-set binge, eating out with Bex, time by the sea, and running around after his boys.

Jonny is originally from the North Coast of Ireland, the accent remains, where he spent many hours of a happy childhood on the beach and in church – two places where he met God. His faith grew on short term mission trips, every summer for seven years, to the Czech Republic where they would teach English, run a sports programme, and share some of the love of God with the Czech students. It was on one such trip that Jonny felt a call to study theology at the university of Oxford. It was a challenging three years, full of energy, questions and reassessing everything – Jonny loved it. And after meeting Bex and settling into Cornerstone Baptist they began to sense a call to Pastoral Ministry. This would be confirmed by Cornerstone and the Baptist Union and would lead to Jonny returning to Regents Park for ministerial formation whilst serving for three years at The Church in Binley Woods. This would be followed by three years as Associate Minister at Dagnall Street Baptist, St Albans. Though short, both ministries were fulfilling, encouraging and shaping and Jonny looks forward to taking what he has learnt and continuing to grow with us here at Haddenham Baptist.

Jonny believes he is called to help form an open, authentic, questioning community of faith, where all-ages and voices are welcome and encouraged, as we seek to partner with whoever we can to help in God’s great mission of building a kingdom of justice, mercy and love in the lovely community of Haddenham.

Emma Chowns

I live in Haddenham with my husband and our two teenage children. I have attended Haddenham-cum-Dinton Baptist Church for nearly 20 years.

I became a deacon 6 years ago and I am also the church’s safeguarding trustee. In my spare time I enjoy gardening and tending our allotment, especially if the sun is shining!

Katherine Robson

I am Katherine Robson and I have grown up within the HBC family since I was a baby and became a deacon in 2020. I was married in the church in 2016 and celebrated my sons dedication 30 years after my own, and my daughters in 2022.

I trained and qualified as a chartered accountant in 2014, so it seemed a natural progression to become treasurer when the role became vacant.

I have a young family and thoroughly enjoy being on the JAM youth leadership team.

My hobbies include reading, cooking, going to the cinema/theatre and socialising with friends and family.

Marjorie Johnston

I have been associated with Haddenham Baptist Church for over 36 years, and a deacon for the last 8 years.

I am currently the church administrator and am therefore involved in much of the email communication in the church. I am married to Bill and together we have four grown up children.

Katharine Whitney

I have lived in Haddenham for forty six years and am lucky enough to have all my children and grandchildren living in the village. I became a member of Haddenham Baptist Church in July 2018. Since then I have become the Christian Aid representative for our church and joined the mission team. I took over doing the BMS birthday scheme a few years ago.

I became a Deacon about eighteen months ago and have enjoyed being part of the team. It has been quite challenging over the last eighteen months, trying to raise money for the Hats and Boots project but it has been gratifying to see how much support we have had from the wider community. For the last 5 years I have been part of the CTIH Open the Book team who go into the three school and take an assembly each week. It’s very rewarding to go in and see the children enjoying Bible stories.

I like being a member of a small church and feel comfortable with the friendly and supportive church family.
